The detailed Step-by-Step guide to Photoshop Someone into a Picture:
Step 1. Choose the photo you want to use
The first step is to find your image, look for 2 nice pictures in your own library or from a stock photo site, like Shutterstock, Gettyimages, or Pexel.
In this example, I’ve used 2 photos from Unsplash.
Tip: It is easier to cut out someone from photos with a clean background.
Step 2. Open the photo in Photoshop
The second step is to open the image with the person that you want to edit in Adobe Photoshop.
(File > Open on the top left corner). Cmd + O (for Mac)/Ctrl + O (for Windows).
Step 3. Selecting The Person
Choose the object selection tool in newer versions of Photoshop. For older versions, use the quick selection to cut out the person.
In this tutorial, I will show you how to use the “Object Selection Tool”.
Choose the “Object Selection Tool”.

Choose “Select Subject” at the top.

You will see a selection around the person.
Step 4. Refine the Selection
Click “Select and Mask” from the top.

This is where we make the selection edges better. I always zoom in a bit, so you can see every detail.
Set the radius to 1 and play a bit with the sliders to add some feather and contrast to smoothen it out.

Use the refine brush on the edges to make it nicer.
Choose the “Refine brush” on the left.

With a red mask, you see easily what you could make better, so fix where needed.

Turn on “Decontaminate Colors” and choose “New Layer with Layer Mask” from the Output Settings and click “OK”.

Step 5. Combining the 2 images in Photoshop
Open the background photo (File > Open) or use the shortcut Cmd + O (for Mac)/Ctrl + O (for Windows). So you have open two tabs in Photoshop.
Go back to the image/person you have cut out. Take your image (with the background removed). This layer is in a layer mask. We need to combine this image with the new background.
Choose the “Move Tool” (V key).

Click down and hold, and drag the photo up to the tab of the image we are moving the photo into. Wait for the image to open, don’t let go yet. Drag your cursor into the middle of the photo and let go.

You will now have 2 layers. We need to make the new layer match the background.
Step 6. Matching the lightning of the layers
Let’s make the surfer smaller and change the position. Make the person the size it fits in the background and place it in the right position in the photo.
Press Cmd/Ctrl+T for Free transform. Use “Shift” to keep the correct proportions. When you are happy with the size and position, press “Enter” to apply the transformation.
Did you notice that the angle of the sun on the background photo is not the same as the person? It’s going in the opposite direction, so let’s flip the person.
Press Cmd/Ctrl+T for Free transform, right click and choose “Flip Horizontal”.

Step 7. Matching colors between the object and the background
Currently, the color tones and saturation are different from the person and the background. Let’s fix this now.
Make sure the object/person layer is the currently active layer.
In Photoshop 2022 and newer choose “Filter>Neural Filters”.
In earlier versions use Image>Adjustments>Match

Choose the Harmonization option, by clicking the slider in Photoshop 2022 and newer.
If not installed yet download the filter.

Click “Select a Layer”, and choose ”Background”.
You will see the color of the person change to match the background.

Sometimes the effect is too strong. Adjust the “Strength” and “Brightness” and play a bit with the colors, until the images look good.

Click on the bottom at the output “New Layer” and then “OK”. You will have a new layer on top of the other existing 2 layers.

Step 8. Save your project and you are ready to go
Done! This is our final result.
